Health Discussions to Focus on Stress Relief for Adults and Children

CLEVELAND, OH, SEPTEMBER 15, 2009 – Two leading providers of holistic wellness programs in Northeast Ohio have joined forces to create the Family Wellness Fair – a free event to educate, inspire and provide you with ways to reduce the stress of daily life.  On Sunday, October 4 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Insight Learning & Wellness Center and The STAR Institute of Ohio will present the Family Wellness Fair at their facilities in the Emery Place Office Suites, 25901 Emery Road in Warrensville Heights. The free open house event includes fun activities for kids and educational health programs for adults.

Designed to introduce the community to the many natural and holistic ways we can find stress relief and take better care of ourselves, the Family Wellness Fair will be a fun and inspirational event with refreshments, door prizes and give-aways.

The impact of stress on our health

Everyone carries the burden of stress, however you may not realize that stress leads to many health problems and can reduce your lifespan when left unchecked. The good news is there are many natural ways to relieve your body of stress and maintain optimum health.  Stress reducing therapies are among the many services offered to both children and adults by Insight Wellness and STAR Institute. The Family Wellness Fair will introduce several of these techniques from Reiki to yoga to biodynamic craniosacral therapy.

Children’s Activities

Children will enjoy movement and fun activities such as musical yoga, art expressions and how to make a nutritional snack. The children will also get to experience TKD Focus Fusion, a fun movement class for kids that incorporates the disciplines of Tae Kwon Do, Pilates, yoga and Brain Gym. The class teaches children confidence, self-control, respect, problem-solving and the ability to focus – all while having fun.

Health Programs

Adults will have the opportunity to choose from eight health programs presented by highly experienced and credentialed professionals on a variety of topics, including natural stress relieving techniques. Noted Integrative Psychiatrist, Lynn Klimo, MD, of Summa Psychiatry Associates, Summa Health System, will present “Releasing Negative Emotions with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).” EFT is a method used to identify and reduce negative and stressful emotions and bring about a positive change in behavior patterns that reduce stress and generate overall feelings of well being.

Jennifer Corlett, Ph.D., a registered craniosacral therapist (RSCT) will lead one of two programs related to stress reduction and achieving better health. She will present “Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy: Beyond Meds,” a discussion of how this gentle touch therapy can help balance the central nervous system and has been an effective treatment for many conditions.  Christine Lang, LPC, will offer “Settling: A Simple Way to Calm the Nervous System” a stress reducing practice that can enable you to become calmer even in stressful situations.

Parenting Education Programs

The event will also feature parenting education seminars to help facilitate better behavior, stronger communication and reduce stress within families. “Parenting Mindfully with Emotional Intelligence,” presented by Kathy McMullin, certified CTI Coach and Gestalt Practitioner, will discuss the struggle between love and discipline and describe ways to improve communication and reduce negativity in the family unit.

Licensed School Psychologist, Michelle Martin, ED.S, will present two seminars for parents.  “ADHD & Autism: Holistic Answers with No Side Effects” will focus on natural methods to reduce hyperactivity, anxiety and depression, while increasing focus and control. “Focus Fusion TKD: Benefits of Movement for Attention and Learning” will introduce parents to an innovative blend of movement and energy psychology that has been found to be especially effective in helping children and teens with behavioral or learning difficulties.

Attendees will learn about the Social Nervous System with Fred Snowden, RCST, RPP and LMT, who will present “An Introduction to Biodynamic Work with Babies and Young Children” a discussion of how Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can ease birth transition and lessen the effects of birth challenges.

The health programs will also include a presentation by Marilyn Wise, LICDC, Licensed Addiction Counselor, who will discuss “ASTARA: An Alternative Approach to Addiction Recovery.” ASTARA is a new method of treating all kinds of addictions by using a blend of holistic modalities to heal the roots of the problem and treat the whole person, not just the addiction.

Camp teaches children how to be strong in mind and body

Four weeklong sessions offered to children ages six to 12

CLEVELAND, OH, MARCH 17, 2010 – Your kids may end a week at this camp stronger physically – and mentally.  With a healthy twist on the traditional summer camp experience, Camp Insight aims to provide kids with much more than the skills to create a macaroni necklace. While immersed in a fun, active environment, campers will take part in a variety of activities designed to teach important life skills such as confidence, patience, self-control and how to make healthy choices.

Presented by Insight Learning & Wellness Center, Camp Insight is open to children aged six to 12 during the weeks of June 14 - 25 and August 9 - 20. The camp is offered five days per week from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and meets at the Insight Wellness facility at 25901 Emery Road in Warrensville Heights.

Directed by Michelle Martin, licensed school psychologist and founder of the center, the camp will provide children with fun activities that exercise and energize the mind, body and spirit. Campers will take part in movement, art, music and positive psychology exercises to build confidence, self-awareness and focus. Camp lessons are designed to help children learn to concentrate to improve school performance as well.

“While having fun and without even knowing it, the children learn patience, focus and how to calm themselves,” said Martin. “Through fun, interactive activities they develop important social skills and positive behaviors. Most importantly, they discover wellness habits that will serve them throughout their lives.”

"This doesn't feel like a camp, it was much more fun, like an adventure,” said Matthew Morrissey, age eight. “I loved the cooking and art and got to do it the way I wanted to. Every day was better and better!"

Unlike camps led by high school counselors, Martin has assembled a strong team of experienced professionals who will guide campers through a range of activities designed to build character and self-esteem. The camp’s staff includes school psychologists, certified yoga instructors, musicians, Tae Kwon Do instructors, an art therapist, professional artist, counselor and reiki master.

In addition to learning exercises that increase physical strength, stamina and flexibility, campers are inspired to be creative, peaceful and empathic towards others. They explore productive conflict resolution and learn tools to alleviate stress.

“The camp was just a week, but it had such a lasting impact on my son,” said Maribeth Morrissey, Matthew’s mother. “He came out of there more confident and happy.  Every school should follow the guidance of Insight Wellness in how they teach, inspire and love the kids.  I recommend them to all my friends with children.  Michelle has an amazing gift and talent with kids. She helped Matthew work on his strengths and challenges from day one. I am so grateful and thankful to have found Camp Insight!”

Camp Activities

Camp Insight encourages the creativity to flow as campers learn healthy skills to stretch their mind, body and spirit in new ways. Campers will experience Tae Kwon Do, Yoga and Qi Gong (Tai Chi), art and music classes. The group will explore nature through guided hikes and take part in challenge games that teach campers to cooperate and solve problems creatively.

Through meditation, guided imagery and visualization exercises, children will learn relaxation techniques and ways to focus on their goals and bring out their best.  Campers will experience positive psychology techniques such as EFT to help them learn constructive ways to process the stress of life and turn problems into opportunities. The children will also learn how to make healthy snacks and the importance of good nutrition.

Space is limited. To register, call 216.765.4470. For more information on Camp Insight or Insight Learning & Wellness Center, visit www.insightwellness.org.

Healthy Soles to introduce the health benefits of reflexology

Try Reflexology for Free! Events at Insight Wellness Center & Mustard Seed Sept. 20-24

(CLEVELAND, OH, Sept. 2, 2010) – Eastside reflexologists will bring the community together through Healthy Soles, a series of events to celebrate World Reflexology Week at Insight Learning & Wellness Center, 25901 Emery Road, Suite 114, in Warrensville Heights, Ohio.  Organized by the International Council of Reflexologists (ICR), events like these will be taking place worldwide to celebrate World Reflexology Week, raise awareness and spread good health through this healing art.

Healthy Soles: Many Faces of Stress

The first local event takes place Monday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m. “Many Faces of Stress” will feature Maebelle Mills Algee, ARCB and Terry Carine, IIR as they introduce the health benefits of reflexology and provide demonstrations. Members of ICR, Algee and Carine will discuss how reflexology can help relieve stress and specifically address the ways in which the practice has been documented to help cancer patients as well as those struggling with addictions.  Algee is one of the only reflexologists in the area to be board certified by the American Reflexology Certification Board.  Carine is certified by the International Institute of Reflexology.

Cheryl Apisdorf, MBA, Outreach Assistant of The Gathering Place, a cancer support center, will also speak as to how reflexology has become a commonly used healing therapy for cancer patients there. Reflexology treatments help to boost the immune system and promote internal healing. It is especially helpful to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy as it relieves the symptoms of nausea and constipation.  Reflexology does not pose any interaction risk with any other treatments or medicine.

Additionally, Marilyn Wise, LICDC, Director of ASTARA Holistic Addiction Recovery will also speak to illustrate how reflexology has helped her clients facing the challenge and stress of overcoming addiction.  “Reflexology is a powerful tool in helping the body to detoxify,” said Algee. “This is extremely helpful for those suffering with all types of addictions.”

While at first glance Reflexology may seem like a foot massage, research has documented that the practice provides relief to a wide range of health conditions.  Besides soothing tired feet, the practice is a great stress reliever, helps to relieve tension headaches, digestive disorders, arthritis, insomnia and back pain.  As reflexology helps to balance mind, body and spirit, it provides calming effects and helps to stabilize emotions.

This event is free, but space is limited. To register, call 216.765.4470.

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?

Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands that correspond to an individual’s organs and body systems.  Through application of pressure on these reflex points in the hands and feet, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation, helps the body to rid itself of toxins and encourages overall healing.

The pressure on these points can also cause physiological changes in the body that promote health in the corresponding organs through energetic pathways in the nervous system.  The pressure sends signals that balance the nervous system and release endorphins that reduce pain and stress.

Algee and Carine provide reflexology services out of Insight Learning & Wellness Center. For more on these practitioners, please visit or www.insight-wellness.com.  To schedule an appointment, call 216.765.4470.  For more information on reflexology, see the ICR website: www.icr-reflexology.org.
